Toxins in Your Home
Some of the most polluted air you can breathe is right in your own home. The EPA has found that most indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and it can easily be a hundred times more polluted due to the combined effects of multiple toxic sources concentrated in a confined space. Add to that the fact that most Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors, and you are looking at a major aging and disease factor.
Virtually anything in your home can be a source of pollutants: building materials, furnishings, mattresses, gas appliances, furnaces, cleaning and personal care products, tobacco smoke, incense, deodorants, carpets, paint, copy machines, printers, electronic equipment, dry cleaning, newspapers, and magazines. Any smell that is not a natural smell is almost certainly toxic. Hot water in dishwashers, clothes washers, bathtubs, and showers vaporizes chlorine and other chemicals, as well as the bleaches or detergents being used. Good ventilation is essential, as is using a water filter for showering.
Obvious though it sounds, the most important thing you can do to keep your indoor air clean is to stop introducing pollutants in the first place. Before purchasing something, consider what it might add to your indoor pollution. If your new item has an odor, give it a chance to outgas before putting it in your living space. When you can, use heat or sunshine to expedite the outgassing process. Do not use products that have noticeable chemical odors, such as mothballs or air fresheners.
